Jharkhand was carved out of Bihar State in November 2000 and it has 24 districts. It is a beautiful state with green forests, and having large deposits of minerals. It has good road, rail and telecommunication network. State covers an area of 79,714 Square Kilometers and is home to 31,101,898 people (projected for year 2008). Jharkhand is situated in North-eastern part of India surrounded by West Bengal, Orissa, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, all being endemic for Leprosy.
Jharkhand boasts of the largest steel plant in the country at Bokaro; apart from Jamshedpur being the city of TELCO and TISCO steel industries.
Leprosy programme is well integrated with the GHC services. Cases are detected through self- reporting or referral, diagnosed at health facilities and managed at HCFs’ or at patients’ residence through MPWs. The MOs’ at PHCs are able to diagnose and manage leprosy including reactions cases. The State Leprosy officer is supported by NLEP consultant and Coordinator from ILEP (at State level). At the district level, support to District Nucleus is provided through Leprosy Programme Advisor placed by NLR India.

Analysis of the table
As can be seen in the above table, there has been steady decline in both “Prevalence Rate” and “Annual New Case Detection Rate” since 2002-03. However, there has not been any remarkable change in proportion of “Children”, “Females” and “Grade 2 Disability” amongst new cases since 2002-03. There can be seen steady increase in proportion of “MB cases” amongst new cases since 2000-01. Gr 1 disability cases started reporting regularily since 2008-09.
