Health Wealth Podcast: Shedding Light on Leprosy with Dr. Ashok Agarwal

In the latest episode of Health Wealth, Dr Ashok Agarwal, Chief Executive Officer of NLR India Foundation spoke about the Leprosy. Health Wealth is a weekly podcast designed to inspire and motivate you about your health and wellbeing, with its 76th episode shedding light on the often forgotten disease, leprosy. What is leprosy, and why does it still affect so many lives in modern India? In the latest episode of Health Wealth, Dr Ashok Agarwal, Chief Executive Officer of NLR India Foundation spoke about the disease.

Leprosy is a bacterial infection that mainly affects the skin and nerves. While it is entirely curable, stigma and misinformation continue to isolate those affected. Why do such misconceptions persist? How can early detection and treatment help break the cycle of fear and discrimination?

Dr Ashok Agarwal explains that India shoulders a large share of global leprosy cases. Even with preventive therapies and improved treatments, reaching underserved communities remains a major hurdle. Stigma makes it even harder for people to seek timely help, leading to avoidable disabilities and social challenges.

This episode asks an important question: How can we shift our attitudes from exclusion to understanding? With awareness, early treatment, and community support, leprosy can not only be controlled but the lives of those affected can significantly improve.

Let us continue spreading awareness!

How India can destigmatise, bid goodbye to leprosy

India reports about 100,000 new leprosy cases each year, making up more than half of the global total. Sadly, about 5% of these cases involve disabilities. Even though India met the national leprosy elimination criteria in 2005, many districts are still high burden areas.

On World Leprosy Day, Dr Ashok Agarwal, CEO of NLR India, highlighted the realities faced by those affected by leprosy. Despite treatment availability, stigma remains a major issue. NLR India found that 79% of family and community members hold negative attitudes toward patients, and 45% of leprosy patients report poor mental health.

Leprosy is not hereditary and does not spread through casual contact. It is caused by bacteria and is spread through prolonged, close contact with untreated patients. However, even one dose of medication can make a patient non-infective.

Leprosy patients often face physical, mental, social, and economic challenges. Their families also experience discrimination. Let us raise awareness, fight stigma, and support those affected by leprosy to lead healthier, stigma free lives.
